Somalia's SSC regions people celebrates the election of new leaders. Haboon Haji Abdullahi reports

Waagacusub.net - Khatumeets gathered again on SSC cities to celebrate the announcement of a new president and Vice President. People danced and sang as former Somalia’s Prime minister Dr. Ali Khalif Gallaydh was officially named the state's new leader.

It was the announcement people on SSC regions had been awaiting to hear for years.

"Ali Khaliif, known as Dr. Gallaydh, received unanimous 31 votes from Khatumo’s parliamentarians," an election official said.

The declaration finally makes the former federal legislature the official president of Khatumo state of Somalia. The election's result - a foregone conclusion for months - is now reality.

A feeling of relief seemed to overcome the people gathered at all SSC regions Thursday (08.14.2014). They danced and sang in celebration and held their arms in the air forming an "S" with their hands - the sign for "Somalia."

Khatumo's new president is announced at Saaxdheer square, providing a festive atmosphere for the city's people to welcome their new leader. This celebration, however, is different, according to people at SSC cities who said there was more young taking part in the celebration.

'Khatumo needs a strong leader'

The crowd represents a cross-section of Khatumo society - or at least the 90% of the SSC people who supported for Dr. Gallaydh and those who see him as the savior of the SSC regions. Abdi Dhere, one of Dr. Gallaydh's supporters who made the trip to Saaxdheer from Cerigaabo to hear the election results, said life in Khatumo will improve under the former PM leader.

"Khatumo States needs a strong leader like Dr. Gallaydh," he said, holding his hands as if texting with an iPhone. .

A common enemy in the Northern Secessionists (Somaliland)

Fahma, a woman in a black veil in her 50s, began nearly every sentence with "Somaliland - they're terrorists!" Fahma carried a banner with a photo of her son Jama Yare and the story of how he was killed in Qorilugud area. The banner said members of the Northern Tribal Secessionists (Somaliland) shot him at Qorilugud 31 days ago. The Somaliland militiamen had come to the Qorilugud area to attack anyone who didn't adhere to their secessionism beliefs. Fahma said she Supported for Dr. Gallaydh.

"Let me tell you, Dr. Gallaydh, do not reconcile with the Secessionists when it comes to the corpses of our sons and their blood," she said as the people around her nod in agreement. "They are martyrs - they paid for Khatumo state with their blood."

There was a sense of unity on SSC regions. The new president would have to confront the northern tribal secessionists (Somaliland), provide security for the country and improve the struggling economy. How Dr. Gallaydh can achieve these goals remains unclear, but the people on SSC cities said they don't need an answer tonight.

Somalia:Al-Shabaab after Godane?

For over six years, Ahmed Abdi Godane has led al-Shabaab with a macabre mix of unbridled brutality and striking charisma. He fostered the spectacular growth of a militia recently splintered from the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) to an effective, if ruthless, administration controlling roughly half of Somalia and most of the capital, Mogadishu. Paradoxically, however, he also contributed to its rapid decline in recent years by eliminating his rivals and dismantling the structure of the group that precipitated its grip on Somalia. If reports of Godane's death are confirmed, Al-Shabaab will never again be as it was under his leadership. Full Article

There were no attempts to subject the PM's action (reshuffle without consultation with the President), the President's action (nullification of PM reshuffle decree and instruction to the cabinet), and the Parliament's action (no confidence motion on "all-purpose allegations") to independent expert opinion or judgment. This would have established good governance practices.
